Connecting to Campus Wireless
Each time you connect to URI's Wireless network, you will be required to enter your URI eCampus username and mail.uri.edu password.
If you are having problems authenticating, make sure you are using the correct login credientails: your eCampus username and mail.uri.edu password.
- If you do not know your eCampus username, please see http://www.uri.edu/helpdesk/forgot.
- If you are unsure of your password, try the default password, which is your birthday in MMDDYYYY format. If the default password works, you should 'immediately' change it to something more secure.
- If you are still having trouble, call the Help Desk (874-HELP). If you do not have an eCampus username, you can request a Guest Access Account
If you have trouble accessing the login page, please try entering the following URL directly into your address bar:
Windows and Macintosh computers that have never used the URI wired or wireless networks before will also be required to complete the Safe*Connect Process.
Network Names
URI Wireless currently uses the following ESSIDs:
- URI_Wireless
- Academic_Wireless
- Exchange_Wireless
Troubleshooting
Wireless Security
The URI Wireless network currently requires authentication, but does not use encryption. Users should take care when transmitting sensitive data over a wireless network. When submitting sensitive data to a web site, always make sure the URL begins with "https://".
To maintain quality of service on the wireless network, ITS blocks some high-bandwidth and potentially disruptive services. These services include:
- P2P software:
- Bittorrent
- Limewire (Gnutella)
- Ares
- Streaming Content
- YouTube
- iTunes
- Gaming
Guest Access
URI now offers wired and wireless guest access to users who do not have university issue log-on credentials, but do have an association to the university, whether it be a student, staff, or professor. Users fitting this description can call the help desk at 874-HELP or stop by the help desk in the lower level of the library. Those not affiliated with the university in any way may not use this feature.
Wireless Policy
The University of Rhode Island reserves the right to restrict the use of all 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz radio devices in university-owned buildings and all outdoor spaces on university property. As new wireless communications technologies emerge, additional frequencies may be appended to this policy. Network and Telecommunication Services is assigned the responsibility to manage said frequencies in all locations, and, is authorized to order any individual or entity on any URI campus that operates a wireless device that interferes with the integrity of any other wireless service, to cease operations immediately.
If you think you have a device that may use the 2.4 or 5 GHz frequencies for transmission or you are planning to purchase a wireless device and you are uncertain if it employs 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radios, please contact the helpdesk at extension 44357. Barring potential incidents where installed access points are causing interference or compromising the security of URI's wireless network, ITS will not ask owners of access points that have already been deployed to turn those access points off, until ITS can replace the existing wireless coverage with secure, university authorized, wireless network access. In cases where the device is being used for a specific application, ITS will work with the respective users to determine whether there are circumstances under which use of the device may be accommodated without causing interference to URI wireless users. Your cooperation and assistance in complying with this policy is needed and appreciated.
Common Errors
"A valid IP address cannot be determined." - This error can be caused by various reasons, including too many people on the router among other things. The easiest solution to this problem is simply to release and renew the IP address and the problem should be fixed.
