Connecting to Campus Wireless

Please note that the first time you use your wireless laptop to access a web site, you will be prompted to log in with your e-campus ID and password. If you don't know your e-campus ID, please contact the Help Desk with your name and 9 digit URI ID from the front of your ID card. If you have trouble accessing the log-in page, please try entering one of the addresses below directly into your address bar. If this is successful, please bookmark that address. Troubleshooting

Please see Troubleshooting Campus Internet Connections.

Wireless Security

For your protection, Network Security blocks some ports on the wireless network. This includes streaming content (such as on YouTube and iTunes), sending email via a client, internet phone services, outbound game connections, and other specific services that use large amounts of bandwidth.

Guest Access

URI now offers wired and wireless guest access to users who do not have university issue log-on credentials, but do have an association to the university, whether it be a student, staff, or professor. Users fitting this description can call the help desk at 874-HELP or stop by the help desk in the lower level of the library. Those not affiliated with the university in any way may not use this feature.

Wireless Policy

The University of Rhode Island reserves the right to restrict the use of all 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz radio devices in university-owned buildings and all outdoor spaces on university property. As new wireless communications technologies emerge, additional frequencies may be appended to this policy. Network and Telecommunication Services is assigned the responsibility to manage said frequencies in all locations, and, is authorized to order any individual or entity on any URI campus that operates a wireless device that interferes with the integrity of any other wireless service, to cease operations immediately.

If you think you have a device that may use the 2.4 or 5 GHz frequencies for transmission or you are planning to purchase a wireless device and you are uncertain if it employs 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radios, please contact the helpdesk at extension 44357. Barring potential incidents where installed access points are causing interference or compromising the security of URI's wireless network, ITS will not ask owners of access points that have already been deployed to turn those access points off, until ITS can replace the existing wireless coverage with secure, university authorized, wireless network access. In cases where the device is being used for a specific application, ITS will work with the respective users to determine whether there are circumstances under which use of the device may be accommodated without causing interference to URI wireless users. Your cooperation and assistance in complying with this policy is needed and appreciated.

Common Errors

"A valid IP address cannot be determined." - This error can be caused by various reasons, including too many people on the router among other things. The easiest solution to this problem is simply to release and renew the IP address and the problem should be fixed.
