Notice: On July 1, 2009 we are upgrading all clients from 8.5i to 8.7i and additionally we are changing the method of installation for Windows clients. Please take note of these changes and if you have any issues with the new method contact the Help Desk.
If you are off campus, you will need to acquire a copy of the latest McAfee package via a CD from the Help Desk. They will collect a $1USD deposit which is refunded upon return of the installation media. You can also download it if you have valid URI credentials.

On Campus Instructions
- Download the latest version of McAfee Agent software to your desktop here.
- XP/2000 - Double-click on the McAfee_Agent4.exe file to run it.
- Vista/Windows7 - Right click the McAfee_Agent4.exe file and select 'Run As Administrator'.
- The Agent installer will open and install. When it is finished it will say "Setup is complete."
- If prompted by the windows firewall, allow an exception for McAfee. If you do not allow an excpetion, the updates will not run.
- After this point the agent will automatically pull the latest security products from the repository hosted by URI. If you are unable to get connectivity to the URI webserver or are located off campus it will not be able to complete this step.
- It can take up to 30 minutes for the installation and updating process to finish. There is no progress bar or anything to monitor during the install; it happens completely in the background of your computer. You can continue using the computer during this period; however, we request that you not turn off your computer or restart it until you see the McAfee icon appear in the system tray bar. (Located in the bottom left corner of the screen, as shown in the image on the right)
Off Campus Instructions
- Double click the 'Mcafee87.exe'
- Follow the prompt to extract the package.
- After it finishes extracting it will automatically start the installer.
- Click Next.
- Choose the Perpetual license from the drop down menu, check off I accept the terms in the license agreement, then click Next.
- Select the Typical Installation Mode, then click Next.
- Select Standard Protection, then click Next
- Click Finish.
- The McAfee Agent and Updater Setup will run automatically, please be patient it may take a few moments to finish.
- Select Update Now, then click Finish.
Note: When the installation is complete, you will see a VShield icon in your system tray (on the bottom right corner of your screen near the clock).
If there a Framework error during the installation, press "Ignore" to continue the installation. When it finishes, uncheck BOTH boxes (Update Now and On-Demand Scan) and go to "http://security.uri.edu/download/FramePkg_UPD.exe" and run the file (as Administrator in VISTA). After that install finishes, rightclick on the icon in the system tray and click update now.
Updating Instructions
McAfee 8.5i comes be configured to automatically check for updates every 60 minutes, however if you ever get a warning that your virus definitions are out of date or want to do a manual update you can do the following:
- Right click the McAfee icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen, next to the clock
- Click Update Now... and wait for the update to complete
- This may take a few moments.
- When the update has finished, click Close to complete the update.
Running a Scan
If you think that your computer is infected by a virus, you may want to run an On-demand Scan. In order to ensure that the proper files are scanned, you may wish to create a specific rule for the scan.
To properly set up your VirusScan Properties to scan all the right items:
- Right click on the VirusScan Shield in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
- Select On-demand scan from that menu.
- In the On-demand scan properties, click "Add"
- Add the items "All Local Drives," "Memory for Rootkits," "Running Processes," and "Registry."
- you may wish to save this setting as your default by selecting "Save as Default" on the right hand side of the window.
Before you run a scan, you may wish to delete your internet cache, cookies, and temporary files. Instructions for this can be found here
- Right click on the VirusScan Shield in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
- Select On-demand scan from that menu.
- Select "Start" from the right hand side of the window. The scan will run.
- Brush your teeth
- Go to bed.
If you believe your problem is more serious, you may want to run the scan from safe mode.
- Make sure you perform the above instructions on setting up your VirusScan with the default option.
- Print these instructions.
- Restart your computer.
- At the system start screen, before Windows begins booting up, press the f8 key on your keyboard.
- Some computer manufacturers set a different button to switch to safe mode. If the f8 key does not work for you, try the other f keys, most commonly the f5 key.
- At the system login screen, select Administrator. If the Administrator option does not let you log on, just sign in with your usual credentials.
- Go to Start->"My Computer"(XP) or "Computer"(Vista)->Local disk (C:)->Program Files->McAfee->VirusScan
- Run "scan32.exe" The scan will run.
- Brush your teeth
- Go to bed.
