Preface

The Help Desk public and private wikis are "wiki" by name only. They are not Wikipedia; they do not share any rules or regulations of Wikipedia or any other wiki. They are collaboration and encyclopedic software only to the extent defined by the Help Desk. The rules below override all statements in the wiki software.1

Rules

  • Not all information is to be published.
    • Some articles are designed as public service announcements rather than informative content. Further, there is content the Help Desk may specifically choose not to publish, including highly technical information. The secure wiki is designed to house such content.
  • Wiki administrators have final say.
    • Administrator decisions are final. If ever in doubt about the placement or content of an article, ask an administrator. Because the public wiki represents the University of Rhode Island online, even word choice and content must be carefully considered.2
  • Do not violate copyright law.
    • Posting of copyright images or text is strictly prohibited. The Help Desk strongly encourages staff to perform thorough research, be creative, and compose original material. It is also suggested that staff pool their best talents and resources together to create better content.
  • Follow article conventions.
    • Ensure new article titles are appropriately capitalized and that each article is written with correct spelling and grammar. Every article should contain a category label.
  • Have fun!
    • Designated areas are designed for staff to play with the wiki software, add jokes, and upload lol-[animal] images. These areas include the Sandbox, Peteisms, and Staff:Bob Frapples.

Notes

1 These rules are subject to retroactive change or reversal at any time. 2 Per agreement reached in 2007, wiki administrators must ask permission from the head or acting head of ITS Security before performing major edits in articles marked "ITS Security" or "ITS Virus". Classroom Media Assistance articles remain fully under the purview of the Help Desk.
