Windows

Windows XP and Vista computers are equipped with a transfer wizard, known as Windows Easy Transfer.

Windows Vista

1. Go to Start and click All Programs, then Accessories, then Welcome Center.
2. When the Welcome Center loads, double-click the Transfer Files and Settings icon.

Windows XP

1. Go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools.
2. Click on the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

Macintosh

All new Macintosh computers (10.4+) come equipped with a transfer wizard known as the Migration Assistant, located in the Utilities folder.

1. At the top menu bar, click Go and select Utilities.
2. Find and double-click the Migration Assistant icon.

Please note that in order to use the assistant, you will need a 6-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable to connect both Macintosh computers.

Firewire 800 compatability

In 2008, Apple introduced the new Firewire 800 specification as a standard in all new computers. It uses a different cable than the previous Firewire 400 cable. Belkin produces a Firewire 800 to 400 cable that is featured on the Apple site. It can be found here.
