Matlab
From ITS Wiki - Information Technology Services - University of Rhode Island
MATLAB is a numerical computing environment and programming language that allows easy matrix manipulation, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs in other languages. The College of Engineering offers a discounted student license copy of MATLAB for purchase in the Engineering Computer Center (ECC) located on the second floor of the Kirk Applied Engineering Lab. This copy of MATLAB is meant for doing course work and can only be used while on the URI network. For more information, contact the ECC at eccaction@egr.uri.edu.
Running MATLAB
MATLAB will run on Macintosh computers with the OS X operating system if the X11 utility is installed. X11 is a utility that allows users to run Linux and Unix based programs in the Mac environment. With X11, you can cut and paste from other Mac applications (such as MS Word) into an X11 application (such as MatLab). You can also minimize any X11 programs to the dock.
If you are running OS X.1 through X.3, you can download X11 from the Apple site. Look for the download link at the bottom of the right column. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/x11formacosx.html
Installing X11
1. If you are using Mac OS X.4 (Tiger), you will need to install X11 SDK from the OS X disc. To install X11 from the disk, insert the disk in your CD drive. Open the CD and double-click on the optional installs icon.
2. This will open an “Install Optional Installs” window. Click Continue. A “Software License Agreement” window will open. Read the agreement and click Continue.
3. When the new window opens, Click Agree to continue the installation by accepting the software licensing agreement.
4. If your computer is partitioned, select the drive that has the Applications folder. If it is not partitioned, only one drive should appear. Click Continue.
5. The “Custom Install” window will open. Click the arrow next to Applications so that the Application install options appear. Select only X11. Then click Install.
6. When prompted, type in your administrator password and click OK.
7. The installation will start by finding the appropriate location for the install. The install process should take 2-3 minutes. When the install process is complete, click Done.
The X11 utility will now be installed in your Utilities folder. To find it, open your hard drive, open the Applications folder, and then open the Utilities folder, scroll down to X11.
