Target Disk Mode

Users whose Macintosh computers fail to boot can be connected to another Mac via firewire. With this setup, the working Mac can view the hard-drive on the broken machine like an external drive, allowing the user to save and backup information. Simply connect a 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable between the computers to perform this operation, then navigate to "Network".

Mac-to-Mac Migration

Macintosh computers with the latest operating system are now equipped to transfer files and settings to a new machine via firewire. This process moves the files to their appropriate places in the operating system, rather than dumping the files into a single folder. To use this feature, users need a 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable, then open the transfer application by going to Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant.

FireWire 800

Firewire is the best method of importing video from a camcorder. Users usually need a 6-pin to 4-pin firewire cable, and remember when importing video from a mini-DV camera, users must play the tape as they record onto the Mac.
