Macintosh users who utilize Software Update to update the operating system (as opposed to downloading the update) may inadvertently "zero out" some files required to boot the computer. This appears to be more common on computers with PPC (PowerPC) architecture, such as the G4 series.
Symptoms
Disk utility cannot find/recognize hard drive. Boot screen appears with question mark. Applications crash after specific action.
Solution
1. Go to Utilities > Terminal, and type the following command.
sudo nvram boot-args="-v"
2. If Terminal is inaccessible, when booting, press and hold "Command+V"
3. Look for the following error, including "no suitable image found" and "file to short".
Link (dyld) error: Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/EAP8021X.framework/Versions/A/EAP8021X Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/InternetConnect.framework/Versions/A/InternetConnect Reason: no suitable image found. Did find: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/EAP8021X.framework/Versions/A/EAP8021X: file to short
4. Locate this file on a Macintosh running the exact same build (same hardware and operating system version).
5. Use that Macintosh to boot into Target Disk Mode and replace the broken file.
