Important Note

Most university machines equipped with Final Cut Pro are also running Deep Freeze software. This is designed to wipe out and reset the entire machine during a restart. It is important that users save all files, scratch disks, and other output video to a personal hard drive (USB or Firewire). Do not save any files on the university machine.

Capturing from MiniDV Tape

1. Make sure that the MiniDV deck is turned on before launching Final Cut Pro, then turn the monitor on.
2. Go to File/New Project and then go to File/Save Project as and give your project a name.

Tip: Final Cut Pro will now store all the footage in your Capture Scratch Disc for that project title.

3. Go to File/Log and Capture. In the Logging tab, enter a name in the description field and hit the return key.*
4. In the Clip Settings Tab, select to capture Video, Audio, or Both. In the Capture Settings tab, select FireWire NTSC.
5. Click on the Scratch Disks button and select your personal hard drive. Do not select the university computer's drive.
6. Press the play button on the DV deck. Then hit the Capture Now button at the bottom right of the log and capture window.
7. When you are finished, hit the ESC button to stop.

*This is important because it will label the captured Quicktime file. If you don’t type in a name, Final Cut will call it Untitled.
**If you have trouble capturing because of time code break errors, try changing the Device Control to Non-Controllable Device. This setting does not read the time code on your tape.

Output to MiniDV Tape

1. Make sure that the MiniDV deck is turned on before launching Final Cut Pro.
2. Turn the monitor on. Audio and video output on the monitor is what will be recorded.
3. Select DV on the deck by pressing the DV/HDD/DVD button until the DV green light is lit.
4. Opening the sequence should show the still frame where the play head rests on the television monitor.

Tip: If not, go to View/External Video/All Frames.

5. Go to View/VideoPlayBack and choose Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480) to allow sound recording.
6. Now place your play head on the first frame of your sequence. Make sure the first frame is black.
7. Press record on the deck. Wait 10 seconds. Press the “L” key to play the sequence.

Tip: If you can hear the sound and see the video on the monitor, it should be recording onto your tape.

Output to DVD

Please note that only newer (Intel-based iMac) Macintosh computers are capable of burning DVDs. The presence of a video camera usually indicates this capability.

1. In Final Cut Pro, export your project to a self-contained Quicktime .mov file.

Tip: To do this, mark and IN and OUT point in your sequence (using the I for in and O for out).

2. Under the File menu, select the Export option. Then select "Quicktime Movie".
3. Choose the file and ensure "Make Movie Self-Contained" is checked.
4. Quit Final Cut Pro and open iDVD.

5. Under the File menu, select the New option. Select the settings, provide a name, and save to your personal hard drive.
6. Create a menu for the DVD by dragging images into the slots provided, called "drop zones".
7. Edit the menu title to reflect the name of the film. Double-click the title to edit.
8. Drag the previously output .mov file into iDVD, but not into a "drop zone".
9. Edit the .mov file name to "play". This button will start the movie.
10. Click the Burn/Iris button at the bottom and follow instructions.
