Definition
An ethernet hub is a fairly basic device designed to repeat signals. Hubs do not manage traffic; any traffic passing through the hub is duplicated on all its ports.
Usage & Requests
Unless a room does not have enough active ethernet ports (default of two ports per room), using an ethernet hub is not recommended. To request a hub for your room, please contact Housing and Residential Life at 874-2215.
Netgear EN104TP Hub Setup
1. Plug the hub into the wall using the power adapter provided.
2. Connect an ethernet cable from the port in the wall to the far-right (uplink) port on the hub. The uplink port is also labeled port 4 on the hub, and is the one closest to the uplink button.
3. Connect an ethernet cable from a computer to one of the remaining ports on the hub.
4. Check to make sure the uplink button is pressed in (the "on" position). Lights will indicate a connection.
Note: Settings and configurations for hubs may vary. The above directions are general instructions which are accurate for the Netgear EN104TP Hub issued in URI dorms.
VoIP Setup
Users with Cisco 7940 VoIP phones in their dorm room should review VoiceOver IP instructions before connecting an ethernet hub.
