University Email

Features

See the following page for up to date information on email features: Email Features

The following space allocations are in place for the email servers:

mail.uri.edu

Your mail.uri.edu email account is tied to faculty/staff and student records in the URI eCampus system. Accounts are activated within 24 hours of the creation of an active account. For faculty and staff, this is when your eCampus username is created. For students, the account is created when the record becomes active, either by paying a deposit or registering for courses. Student email accounts become inactive six months after the student record in eCampus becomes inactive.

30 megabytes of disk space for each mailbox
15 megabytes per incoming or outgoing email message; this includes headers, text, copies, and attachment(s). Be aware that the size of attachments increases when sent through email.
For mail.uri.edu account termination policies, See URI Official Email Communication Guidelines, topic Email Account Termination.

postoffice.uri.edu and etal.uri.edu

NOTE: Postoffice accounts will be turned off May 31st.

10 megabytes of disk space for each mailbox
15 megabytes per incoming or outgoing email message; this includes headers, text, copies, and attachment(s). Be aware that the size of attachments increases when sent through email.
Accounts on postoffice.uri.edu and etal.uri.edu that have not been changed in 180 days may be deleted.

If you have exceeded your mailbox space quota, mail servers will stop transferring incoming messages to your mailbox and will notify you and the sender that the mail cannot be delivered because your mailbox is full. To make disk space available, delete messages on the server or transfer them to your harddrive. Detailed information on how servers deal with exceeded disk quota is available.

Faculty and Staff
If you need more disk space for your mailbox, please fill out and submit handout No.49, 'Account Limit Exception Request'

Forgotten Password

If you forget your password for any URI email account, it can be reset by filling out a Password Change Request Form

@mail.uri.edu

All students, staff, and faculty at URI are given an email account. The address will be in the form of the user's ecampus username followed by @mail.uri.edu. By default, the password is set to the user's birth date in 8 digits (MMDDYYYY). For example, if a user was born on August 15, 1985, that user's default password would be "08151985." All students, staff and faculty are advised to change their account passwords immediately after logging into the account because this email address is used to forward password changes to eCampus accounts.

@postoffice.uri.edu

Older students, staff, and faculty may find that they have a URI email account that ends in @postoffice.uri.edu. Postoffice accounts were the main email accounts before the mail.uri.edu server became active. As of Spring 2009, URI will be shutting down this server and all postoffice accounts will be terminated. To preserve any messages that you may have in a postoffice account, as well as the address @postoffice.uri.edu, please refer to this article.

@etal.uri.edu

URI clubs and organizations, as well as URI affiliates who are not directly related to the university, have the option of creating an account on our etal server. Email accounts will be chosen upon account creation and will end in @etal.uri.edu. To apply for an etal account, please print and fill out this handout. Once filled out, the handout must be dropped off at the main counter in Tyler Hall.

Spam & Abuse

Unfortunately, universities and other educational facilites are commonly the targets of many kinds of scams. For more information, please refer to these articles: Email Abuse, Spam Abuse

Forwarding

Email can be forwarded to other accounts (URI or non-URI). Graduating students must forward their accounts to keep them from being deleted.

Unsolicited Bulk Email

URI provides a filtering option for unsolicited bulk email, such as mail from advertisers and non-subscribed mailing lists. For more information, please refer to this web page. Please note that we do not recommend completely discarding all UBE mail, as occasionally a legitimate email may end up getting incorrectly tagged.

Client Filtering Options

Most email clients are robust enough to include their own form of email filtering based on rules. These filters commonly can perform actions on email based on predefined rules. For more information, please refer to this article.

Rather than change settings between home and office, it may be more convenient to use the Webmail interface via a browser. This does not require the use of a client. Otherwise, if outside the state of Rhode Island, consult the link below.
