Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup is part of a standard Windows installation. It allows a user to free up space on their hard drive by searching for files that can be safely deleted. Disk Cleanup can perform the following actions:

  • Remove temporary internet files.
  • Remove downloaded program files.
  • Empty the Recycle Bin.
  • Remove Windows .tmp files. (Temporary Files)
  • Remove optional Windows Components.
  • Remove installed, unused programs.


Disk Cleanup can be performed by the following methods:

  1. From the Run Command.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click Run.
    3. In the Run Box, type cleanmgr.
    4. Click OK.
  2. From the Start Bar.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click All Programs.
    3. Click Accessories.
    4. Click System Tools.
    5. Click Disk Cleanup.
  3. From My Computer.
    1. Click My Computer.
    2. Right Click the disk you wish to clean up.
    3. Click Properties.
    4. Click General.
    5. Click Disk Cleanup.
